Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

I started out in Polish almost exclusively and then a really fun (NOT) thing happened--my farm partner texted me while I was literally going through the TSA line on the way out to Colorado for a two week vacation with the kids. She told me she just couldn't do chickens anymore and basically sold all of the breeding stock I had cultivated and paid for out from under me. She did not offer or give me any money for it, and then proceeded to keep some of my equipment she borrowed. Absolutely devastating--but in the moment, my husband just told me to let it go. I had to, but it still stings. I'm now in the process of rebuilding, and hope to have a nice assortment of Polish again by the end of the year. Keep me in mind!!
Wow. That is crazy I’m so sorry that happened. So not only do you lose all you chicken I’m sure you lost your partner too. I mean that is just wrong on so many levels.

Hey do you guys think I should take that last silkie egg out of the bator. It’s day 22. I candled and saw no movement no chirping but no smell either. I guess I could wait until tomorrow after work. I will need some hand holding as the only time I did this before was with an early quitter so it was easy to see what was going on. This is definitely a late quitter because it was alive and well at lockdown. I’m thinking maybe it was also malpositioned and when it tried to pip it either drowned or hit a blood vessel. But we’ll see tomorrow after work. How exactly should I start? I’m assuming candle one more time to 💯 sure then crack the egg on the air cell side???
On a happier note I picked up 4 partridge silkie 4 day olds today and my singleton is happy and settled now that she has friends. Also her splay leg looks really good. I may remove the split tomorrow and see how it is. I could always just put another back on if she still looks weak. I’ll try to post pics of the fluffy butts tomorrow. They are all tucked in sleeping under heat plate now.

Aww, I'm so glad you were to get more peeps so quickly to raise with her!

When I do an eggtopsy on late eggs that I think are quitters I always treat them like an assist just to be safe. To do that I candle the egg, mark the air cell with a pencil or crayon and I carefully open the air cell by scoring with a screw that I sterilized with rubbing alcohol. I then pick away at the shell to open the air cell without disturbing the inner membrane. You should be able to see at this point if it's a quitter or not, but if you can't see, using a q-tip to apply coconut oil to the membrane will make it translucent before proceeding.

It has been hard. The worst is losing a friend, but also knowing at the time she was the only one of us with the infrastructure to house 200+ birds. A little over a year later, I’m now on almost 20 acres and better equipped to have a million birds lol. Everything happens for a reason. It all comes out in the wash. 🙏

I agree with @CluckNDoodle. After what I just went through, I’d definitely treat it like an assist just in case.

I'm going to candle my eggs today and see maybe if I have internal pips. The chicks are heading outside into the brooder in the shed today. Husband is out there getting it all ready for them.

I'm pretty much useless right now. I'm not allowed to do anything besides rest. It's driving me bananas, but when I start doing to much I start feeling awful.
It is very hard to just rest but you must. You don’t want to relapse. At least your hubby is doing it for you. Sounds like a great guy. Now don’t make us tie you to the bed LOL! Let your hubby pamper you.

I'm Andrea, though I don't "think" I have met anyone from BYC in person I'm definitely questioning that now because I have a ton of poultry connections and friends locally and on facebook! I mean, I have a hard enough time remembering people's login names here and I admitted to not realizing I've had great conversations in the past with the same people simply because they changed their avatar. :lau I'm terminal. lol
HaHa same here. I had to change my avatar recently because with the update my chicken avatar had its head chopped off! So now all my old "friends" do not know who I am.
