Too early to identify??? McMurray Rare Exotic chick with order 3-29-12 Updated photo

It COULD be a Delaware chick. The wing feathers look to be white, but I could be wrong.

I think it is a bit of a darker yellow - orangish color than the photo above or of the Delaware chick video on McMurray's site, but it could just be a variance in lighting.

I agree the little wing feathers that are starting to come in do appear to be really white.

I'll go take some more photos and check for a beard. Oh, this is fun!!!

Could be an EE. They seem to give a lot of EEs out as rare mystery chicks.

If it has a pea comb - I am definitely going with EE - If it is a single comb, I am sticking with Delaware. Please keep us updated :D

More photos.....legs do have a green tinge to them. I'm new to chickens, so not sure about the comb. Tried to get a good photo of it, but chicky wouldn't cooperate. Not sure about a beard either, I didn't see anything as distinct as the photo above, but I'm new to chickens and don't have a clue what I am looking for.

The feathers coming in are a bright white compared to the rest of it's fluff.

Any guesses for male or female yet?

THANKS for all of the input!!!

Yep, looks like a Easter Egger I love my EEs! Looks like a rooster to me with those heavy legs and upright body

Keep us updated. I am curious to see how it turns out!

Yep! That is an EE for sure, and adorable just like my little Eedie :p I wouldn't be shocked if it were a boy. Almost all of their mystery chicks are.

My EE's were from parent stock of McMurray (the breeder imported EE's to Canada and bred them here). I find yours looks very similar to mine :)

So is EE a specific breed or just a general term for chickens that lay colored eggs (if not a rooster)? How do I know what this little one is going to look like when it grows up? I don't think my hubby wants to keep any roosters around because of the noise, for our own sake, we live in the country so the neighbors wouldn't be too bothered. Like
i said before, this one is sure a sweetie and likes to be held. He even lets the kids hold him.

I can't wait to see what it will look like when it is grown up.

THANKS for all the help!!! I'll try and remember to post photos over the next several weeks to see what he/she is going to look like.

I agree that this is a little EE roo by that stance. It could still surprise you, but hens generally keep low to the ground, and are skittish as chicks, not overly friendly (which means favorites are almost always roos :( )

EEs are not a breed, and more of an informal category created by hatcheries a few decades back in an effort to sell eggs for twice the price because they were green or blue ("Green eggs are twice as healthy for you! We guarentee it!"). Nowadays, the 'ideal' EE has slate/willow legs, muffs, lay green to blue eggs, and have pea combs.

However, since they are not a breed, and not regulated by anyone, you can subsitute, subtract, rearrange, and generally violate the above characteristics to your heart's content, and still technically have an EE, as long as you have one or two of the features. And yes this means you can have an EE that lays a brown egg too.

Your little guy is most likely going to be pure white, with perhaps some leakage of red or buff on the head and shoulders.

EE's can vary in colouring. I think yours will be creamy colouring with spontaneous outburst of colouring, but that's just a guess. Mine haven't feathered into anything but white yet. Time will tell!

Awwww what a cutie! My order should be coming in this week from Healthy Chicks and More...and even though I almost certainly know they will send me a cockerel, it's so hard to resist checking that "Free Rare Breed Chick" box :) Last time I ended up with a banty roo, I have no idea what breed he was but he sure was handsome!
