I have this same problem at the moment, chicks too high up when they hatch!
My hen disappeared a fortnight ago, very free range! She kept coming back periodically to feed so I followed her today. She had set-up nest under a tree on our driveway. We are so rural I could not leave her there so have moved her & the 12 eggs, mmmm not quite understanding the theory behind this, any help??? anyway, moved her to a small coop but she is determined to be up top, so I have had to move the nest again underneath her. I am really hoping at least one or two will hatch. Very excited as she is one of my chicks from last years hatchlings. Will keep you posted and any advice on the multiple egg theory would help. Do they lay more when broody? Last years 12 eggs were a combination of a flock of 9 hens and one very broody hen reluctant to leave the nest. She hatched 7!!
Thanks & happy henning!
