Too many eggs?

Heh, indeed. He grew up with chickens, and has kicked around getting some since he retired, but they travel a lot and aren't home much, so he decided against it. At the very least, I'm sure he'll be playing with the peeps in no time. Mil would be fine with eggs, but her philosophy is more along the lines of "that's what they have stores for" (including canning!).: ep

I, otoh, can't wait!!!

6 will probably give you 3-5 eggs per day, especially those breeds that you want. if you have too many eggs you can leave them unwashed for a good while, in a cool dry place. that way when they go into a molt or decide to slack off in the cool months, then you will have a stockpile of eggs to get you thru it!

Eggs are porous

If you keep them dry the dirt doesn't get inside them. Brush off any stuff you find on them. You can moisten a cloth and brush them off more if they are really dirty but most of the time you'll find the eggs are clean. As long as no one sleeps in the nest box!

You'll end up getting 3-5 eggs per day. On average it will be about 4 with that flock. I have a similar mix of chickens and I'm constantly giving them away to friends and neighbors. You could also look at it this way...you'll never be out of eggs

the coating that is naturally on them from being laid will keep them fresh for quite some time, if you wash that coating off with soap and water, then you must refrigerate them to keep them from going bad. I have also read that you can keep fresh eggs good for over a year, by coating them with mineral oil...but I have only read that not tested it. if the eggs aren't terribly dirty, i usually don't wash them until I need them. but now that I am getting 30 eggs a day, I try to wash them frequently.
