Too many incubator choices

muddstopper, OR Others,

I will soon be cleaning and disinfecting my "Little Giants". I am also "concerned" about FUTURE cleaning of the styrofoam as you expressed:
(quote) I have never used either the LG or the hovabater, so wont comment on them. My biggest concern with either model would be the styrofoam enclosure. Plastic is easier to clean and disinfect. (unquote)

I'm thinking of "coating" the styrofoam (after cleaning/disinfecting) with perhaps polyurethane varnish OR clear lacquer paint OR maybe even thinly applied silicone seal. My initial preference is to use polyurethane.

Any opinions on this?

(NOTE: I have some "scrap" styrofoam on which to "test" any applications.)

ALSO........Would common "dish detergent" and a "bleach rinse" be sufficient for cleaning/disinfecting ?

I suspect that varnish or lacquer will melt the styrofoam just like putting gas in a styrofoam cup. Bleach would be your best bet ( and most likely to already have on hand) in my opinion. I clean all my waters and feeders with bleach. A simple bleach and rinse wont do. Bleach needs to set on the surface for a little while to kill the bacteria. With the styrofoam bators, just plug the vent holes and fill with a bleach solution and let set overnite. Rinse the next day with clean water and your good to go. Thats how I clean my brisnea
