I have three ducks and I don't know what to do with all their poop. They have a house that is getting too small for them which is obviously something I need to solve, but I don't think it will make that big of an impact on how much poop is on the floor. Does anybody have and good ideas on how to clean a duck house and/or what you are supposed to do with all that waste. Is it toxic?
Also what kind of floor should a duck house have? Their current floor is chicken wire against the ground. It's very effective at keeping a very determined fox out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ducks poop theres no doubt about it and alot, I use deep pine shaving in both my ducks and chickens houses, then everyday depending on how nasty i either shovel out the poop on top or turn it under and over . I have a very large tub with handles that I keep outside of their house where I deposit their poop laden shaving then usually by the end of the week i take it to the compost pile or spread it around bushes and such,. wonderful mulch. It musty not be too toxic i have had ducks for 9 yrs and I am pretty healthy, but i do wear one of those paper masks when cleaning out their buildings. They do need space, so working on getting them more space will help. but poop happens it's just a part of having ducks/geese chickens. And

some use vinyl i have it on the floors of my coops with wood underneath. some have houses were you can lift up the roof and spray out the house.

Miss Lydia's is right. Ducks poop - a lot. I have tried cheaper foods and that seemed to increase the quantity of poop. Thinking the better quality food, decreases the quantity a little.....or at least it seems to have done so for my ducks. I use straw and have a big compost pile. But I live in a rural area so space is not an issue.

I have my 3 buffs in a large dog house that we ordered off of Lowe's website.
It fits them just fine! They absolutely love it!!!
Put some pine shavings or hay down in the coop and rake/pitch fork it out of there every other day. We keep a clean hay trash can and a dirty hay trash can to throw our waste into-makes clean up a lot easier!!!
Duck poop can be dangerous....any waste from an animal or person is dangerous so wash, wash, wash , wash your hands!
For flooring, I would scratch the chicken wire--(you can leave it for now until you get a new house for them though because I understand it takes time to build or order supplies, but just put some hay/shavings over it! )
Chicken wire can be really harmful to a ducks sensitive webbing, and if cut, they can come down with a serious case of bumble foot (swelling on the bottom of the feet that can be treated by oral/topical antibiotics) NOT PRETTY LOL.
However, once you get a bigger coop or dog house, you can staple the chicken wire underneath the wood to prevent any predators from getting or digging their way in!
Hope this helps! Good luck with your babies!

yes, get them off the chicken wire! i'm a vinyl fan myself. i lay down the cheapest i can find and throw pine shavings over it. using shavings and diatomaceous earth, i have gone long periods of time without having to do a full clean out. the one at my house i have only done a full clean out once in 3 or 4 years, and that was because it sprung a leak in the roof during the rainy season.

You can make it into great compost. It does need to age for a little while before it's safe for most plants because of the high levels of nitrogen. If a compost pile isn't feasible (ie living on less than an acre) you can make a couple of REALLY big composters fast.

Buy a couple of 55gal food grade plastic drums like this one;

Then follow these instructions;

Also, for faster composting paint the composter matte black and stick it in direct sunlight. This will allow it to absorb heat form the sun to speed up composting. I suggest building two so that while one is composting the other one can become your new bin to stick poo in. :3
