Too much straw in the run?

I usually scatter 1 bale of straw in my 16x21' run and its good. We had alot of rain lately, so I put 2 bales in this time. Now I'm realizing its probably too much straw.
Will all that straw be hard on the chickens walking through it? Its about 5-6" deep. Of course they scratch small areas away in order to dig into the soil, but the rest of the run is just alot of straw. Is that a problem?

I use a lot of straw in my runs in the winter when it's wet and it's never been a problem.

it gets wet and will start to smell when the weather is hot. I usually have a bale in mine but it's still baled up. After it rains a few times, I will flip it over and let the girls have a go at the bugs underneath.
