Too old for egg tooth?

I'm so glad to hear that, thanks for sharing your experience! The chick is very friendly and I'm considering keeping it as a pet (it was originally meant to be eaten) so I don't want to scare it and break its trust by trying to forcefully remove the egg tooth if I don't have to. It comes to me to snuggle and naps on my shoulder :love

What kind of chicks are they?

Woo hoo! This feels like a momentous occasion, almost like a child losing their first tooth! 🤭
That's an adorable comparison! My kids have been losing teeth for a few years now and each one feels so momentous... Growing up super fast just like the chicks!

She looks female so far, but some breeds mature much more slowly than others so males don't become apparent until a bit later. What breed is she, a Buff Orpington? Hatchery or breeder quality?
Yeah, these two are Buff Orpington from the feed store (so hatchery quality). I've had 3 generations of fancy breeder Orpingtons, but these are my first hatchery Orps - do you think there'd be a difference in how they mature? My breeder Orps have all shown unmistakable telltale signs by this age (obvious combs and wattles).

These two (breeder Orpingtons) from a few years ago are actually a few days younger in these pictures, but they are pretty obvious:

Wow, those are early boys! The breeder-quality English Orps I hatched a couple years back waited forever to get their combs in! All three of mine were cockerels, of course.

In my experience looking at 'what breed or gender' posts about hatchery Buff Orps, the males tend to comb up very early, so I would say you likely have a pullet with your egg tooth baby. :D

Phew! My favorites tend to end up male, so this is a big relief.

Just for science, here's a couple of boys from another batch of breeder Orps, from two years ago - at exactly one month old like former-egg-tooth-baby is right now. They've been very easy to sex at one month old:

I know that feeling! I'm having a streak of good luck with picking pullets from my hatches this year, but I know it won't last! 🤭 I thankfully can keep some cockerels, but the ones I designate as favorites usually turn into big buttheads as they mature.

I don't have any pictures of my fancy Orps at exactly one month apparently. Closest I have is 3-and-a-half weeks. It's obvious to me now that they were male just because of the color in the comb and wattle area, but darn, I was pulling for a pullet back then! But yeah, not much of a comb just yet.

They also took forever to feather in! This is about 5 weeks old, same chick as above. You can see one of the others in the background, too, poor naked little dinosaurs. 🤭
