Holy cow from your title I thought you were going to say you were in your 90's!! 50's???
GO for it - far from old. And I know cause I'm about to turn 50 and I am no where near old

I'm getting my first chicks ever this week and I feel like it took 10 years off my life with all the excitement.
My DH thinks it added 10 to his since he's the one building the coop/run!

Keep us posted!!!

Hi, I am also new and 57 years old.... have always wanted chickens. I will be getting 4 chicks in a couple of weeks and can't wait! I agree that you are never too old to have something you really want.... especially if it makes you happy.

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. You're never too old for chickens. My mother is 55 and loves hers more than anything - sometimes I think more than me

She says all the time that the chickens help keep her young and healthy. Best of luck

Hello and welcome to BYC

By all means get chickens! You are still young enough to enjoy them for many years. My MIL is in her 70's and she still has her little flock of bantams though she needs a little help taking care of them nowadays. She still enjoys them.

from New Mexico!

One is NEVER too old for chickens!!! With all the love they have to spread around, no doubt they will keep us all alive much longer than with out them!! Go for it.

Get them, enjoy them and worry about relocating them if and when you downsize. Welcome to BYC.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes and nudges to just get started. I'm checking out larger ice huts for sale. Some come insulated for our Canadian winter temps. They may be a good start to convert and make into a coup way cheaper than building one from scratch. Do you think 9x7 is enough space for 6 hens?
