I'm so glad I found out. I love watching her with her babies. It's actually soothing. They climb all over her and she is so patient. Of course she has the look of " Look at what I did. check out my babies." I have an instant smile and ahhh.
I highly recommend it to everyone. It was so easy. I feel silly now for stressing so bad. And another good part is the other chickens have layed their eggs in the other 2 nests. They were alittle confused that they couldn't get into the ones they usually lay in but didn't take too long for them to figure it out. I have one happy coop.

Just an update. Having a great time with mama and babies. She is a great mom, very protective. Never thought I'd be having so much fun with this. Love it. Thanks all for your help. I love BYC. Everyone is always willing to give a helping hand. I don't think I would have the confidence if it wasn't for everyones help. As my 3 yr old grandaughter says, Good job Nana

Glad it's working out!

Just a heads up, I don't want to make you worry, but...

One of my broodies was a great Mamma until the chicks were 3 1/2 weeks. All of a sudden, one night she did not want to stay with the chicks, and went to roost with the others. Next day, the chicks started to follow her, and she turned against them, caught one by the neck, almost killed the poor thing! I had to intervene and put her on a rabbit cage for a while!

Crazy chickens... Usually they stay longer with the chicks, but each one is different!

Too true, each of the hens have their own personality for sure! It sounds like Patricia has a really good mamma, hopefully she'll hold until they're older than just 3 weeks.

Its amazing to me how some hens don't want anything to do with chicks, and some can't seem to get enough babies and eggs to sit on. Even to the point of stealing other people's babies!*cough*orpingtons*cough*

Oh wow. thanks for the heads up. I will definately stay on my toes checking. I would really feel terrible if something happened to those babies. I am what you would call an extreme animal lover and fell in love with those little fuzzy butts the mintue I saw them. My original plan was only getting 2 and came home with 4 (darn chicken math). Being an animal lover that I am I can't watch anything on t.v. that has running down and killing prey for survival. Forget the animal channel. ha. I'm a woos. See this is why I love BYC. Great advise that I otherwise would not know or think of. Thanks.
