If you're raising ducks also, I'd just stay with grower for everyone. A hen doesn't need layer feed to lay tons of eggs, my girls are testament to that! Far as I'm aware, layer simply has less protein and more calcium. I can supplement calcium easily enough, and I like the tad more protein for my birds.

Agree if your coop is that dark, it's probably not got enough airflow for the cold weather. There are lots of good threads and articles on how much ventilation a coop needs.

I'll switch to layers in a couple of days, its no biggy with the ducks as they don't eat the chicken just the other way around, its more of an inconvenience them an actual problem that the chickens are eating the duck food,
