how do you tell a top knot hen from a top knot rooster?

i have no idea. its black and has a white knot.

sounds like a white crested black polish

this is a hen

i find that crested breeds can be hard to sex. do you have any pics? full body from side like above pic, and one head shot showing the comb and make sure to include the age

Generally, crested breeds can be sexed by their feathers on their head, if they have streamers coming out of their crest then its a male, however if the crest is neat, without streamers, then its probably a hen.

as far as i can tell the only crested breed with streamers are the silkies and this doesn't always apply to them either nor to any other crested breed

It doesn't even always apply with silkies either, lol. I've got a silkie hen with streamers.
