Top of vent torn and picked at

When I was outside this afternoon, I noticed that I had hens chasing one of my light brahma's around, picking at her vent. I don't think it's a prolapse because nothing is poofing out. Instead, the top area of the vent is bloody and chewed up.

I put antibiotic ointment on it and have her in a dog kennel on straw, away from the others. Just wondering if I've done the right things, and if anyone else has had a problem like this and maybe knows the cause.

First time I've had a problem anything like this.

I think you did the right thing...... separate and neosporin with NO pain reliever...... you might put rooster booster or blue coat on it before putting her back with the others

You definitely did the right thing. Don't put her back in with the others until she is completely healed unless you put Blue Coat or a diaper on her bum and even then, watch them closely. They others will not only peck at the wound, but could end up killing her by eviscerating her. Ive seen it happen.

You can avoid most of the pecking order problems when she is reintroduced to the flock by keeping her kennel inside the coop or run so that she is still in contact with the flock. As long as there is no way for them to reach her injury.

I didn't puy any no-pick on her becaus I thought all the menthol stuff might aggravate and hurt her. I plan on keeping her isolated till she's better, I'm giving her H20 every 2 hrs till the lights go off, and then I'll start again in the morning.
