It does help keep feed fresh though, that's what I did with my 50lbs of DE I bought years ago, put a couple cups in my 100lbs of feed mixed it in to keep it fresh especially in summer.fifty pounds of DE oh my

It is suppose to help keep bugs out of the feed, so far I haven't ever had a problem with bugs other than bringing them home from the feed store already in the bag. which was disgusting. So maybe I need to rephrase it I used the 50Lb bag in my feed over a period of a couple years to use it up and hopefully it kept the feed safe from bugs and drier in the humidity of summer. This wasn't a scientific experiment though only K[ casportpony] does those. I just hated to waste it.Neat. Do you know how it works to keep it fresh?
I've never seen DE listed as a preservative. Trace amounts in some feed formulations are not uncommon, but that is merely used to keep feed dry. I never buy more feed than I will use in a month. The feed I use has a milling date on the tag, so I know it is fresh when I buy it. Storing it in a steel container, in a cool, dry place keeps it fresh. I know a few folks who use desiccant packets in steel cans where they store feed.It does help keep feed fresh though, that's what I did with my 50lbs of DE I bought years ago, put a couple cups in my 100lbs of feed mixed it in to keep it fresh especially in summer.
I rephrased my post here to say I used it that way not that that is it's purpose. just to use it up haven't bought any since. Having 31 birds I go through 100 lbs of feed in a month or a little more. I store in a steel container also.I've never seen DE listed as a preservative. Trace amounts in some feed formulations are not uncommon, but that is merely used to keep feed dry.
