Topic of the Week - Drakes and Drake Behaviour

One would chase me if my back was turned, but always stopped if I looked at him.

My Welsh Harlequin drake does that. I call him the chicken drake. For a while he was persecuting one of the ducks, chasing her away from the flock, not allowing her to eat or swim with the other ducks. I put him in a small pen where he could see and hear the females, but not harass any of them. After a few weeks he calmed down and was allowed to rejoin the females. No problems since then.

Drake jail comes in handy sometimes, lol...

I have interesting information about Drakes and penis issues.
Drakes do lose part of the penis each year..It happens during Eclipse. Sometimes without proper water sources to keep the penis clean it won't retract..
:wee..I did research and found out great information about Drakes...The answer is the penis doesn't really fall off but it loses the tip annually..
:woot

Will you share where you got this info please?
:th...My Drake was exposed for two weeks..I contacted 3 Vets and a reputable Hatchery. The tip of his Penis will fall off and he will breed again. The older the Drake the more common. It happens during eclipse. A Drakes penis actually is not a penis really but a way to transfer sperm..

Sorry about your drake :hugs

That's not a normal thing that happens though, that's a penile prolapse. If only the tip was exposed and died it will fall off and he may still have enough of his penis left to breed again. But if too much falls off he'll be infertile. None of what falls off will grow bad, sadly. That's why if a prolapse occurs it's important to try to fix it ASAP. As they get older and more infirm, it definitely is more likely to happen than it is to happen to younger drakes, but it can happen to young ones too. If it all possible you want to get the prolapse fixed before the tissue dies off.

I have read that exposure after a time if the penis can't be retracted will cause it to die and fall off [the part left exposed] but the other about it falling off annually I heard was a myth I'll have to go read up on that.
Believe me I was in panick mode trying to find out..I'm happy I was relentless in my search...
