Topic of the Week - Fly Strike

Pics
My girl Gracie and I are dealing with this at the moment. I feel like I jinxed myself after learning about flystrike just a week ago. I took preventive measures and low and behold 4 days later my girl wouldn't leave the coop. I checked her over and found what looked like a new hatch in a wound near her vent. So lucky to have caught it fast, and thankful for the PSA here and on another group to help me know what I was looking at. I found her Saturday and after insecticide, betadine soaks, and tons of ointment she was looking to roost and is quite bright and chipper despite the horror on her back end. Check those fluffy butts everyone!! Even if they look clean!!

It doesn't just happen to butts.
It can happen any where on the body where there is a wound.
No wound is required, all the flies need is a wet mucky poop warm environment to lay eggs in. The eggs hatch and the maggots migrate to the skin which is also wet and mucky and start eating - I am right this moment dealing with this.

Make sure your chooks don’t have any poopy wet feathers if they do cut the feathers back and clean and blow dry the area.
