Topic of the Week - Recycling (In) The Coop

My coop and greenhouse were built from stuff I re-used or found or appropriated or whatever. I'd actually like to start over just because I'm bored with it, but it works just fine so there's no real motivation to move it higher up on my 'to do' list. :idunno

I just peeked at your coop. It is a very nice setup. Lucky birds!

I was just replying to RUNuts since they asked about raccoon and it's not an issue for me, but my dad did install hardwire cloth inside the window (instead of the regular screen) to keep it more predator proof, so that is a very good suggestion. :)
'Coons may not be an issue now, but I'm betting they would be down the road if you didn't figure them into the equation. They're all over the country.

Thanks to everyone for your "Like". I am very happy with the way the coop turned out. All the birds are secure from predators during the day (almost) & definately at night as they are locked up tight. I still worry about non nocturnal coons (my biggest fear). I plan to address this ASAP.

Raccoons aren't an issue for "me" because that whole chicken house is inside a 10x10 chainlink pen, covered in both netting and 1/4" hardwire mesh on the panels and into the ground, all built under my raised deck with a solid roof, literally attached to my house, inside my 6' wooden fenced yard, where there are large dogs who would get the raccoon before it managed to get across the wide-open 3/4 acre yard to my house/the coop/the chickens. I have the coop door wrapped in extended hardwire mesh overlapping the door top/sides, and have to open 3 latches, 2 bungie cords, and the normal chainlink latch just to get the door open. I made the coop as predator proof as possible after it was in my yard and something got through the top net and took a chicken's head off. Everything was built and factored for it to be totally enclosed inside the coop, and the coop itself to be as secure as possible.

But yes, the normal person with a normal coop in the yard with an attached run may worry about the vents being not raccoon proof, and therefore could put hardwire mesh behind them just to be safe. We did take out the normal window screen and replace it with hardwire mesh fully attached to the inside of the coop to keep the chickens from potentially ripping the screen or getting stuck somehow.

Wow JurassicBawk, sounds like Fort Knox. All you need are land mines.;)

In all seriousness, I have researched welded wire & everything else out there & those darn raccoons can still manage their way in. When you say hard wire; what are you referring to?

I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen 6"x6" 10 gauge Steel Remesh used for foundations. This is what I have in mind & staggering it so the openings are at 3”.

Weasel, mink, ermine, fisher won't even be slowed down unless you overlay it with something of smaller mesh.

Probably means hardware cloth at least 1/2" or it comes smaller 1/4".
