Topic of the Week - What do you do with all those eggs?

We eat some, give some away to neighbors, and feed the rest back scrambled to the chickens, who love them. We keep a container in the barn fridge and serve about a tablespoon per bird each morning when we open the coop. They make a good protein supplement for any bird that's ill or injured, too.

I've considered this, but it just seems so risky. I'm so afraid of egg eaters. Once a bad behavior starts it's usually contagious and hard to break.

Glad to see you having luck with it. Maybe I'll get the courage to try it.

We eat a few, Donate a few, sometimes sell a few, feed a few to injured or sick hens, & plant a few in the garden under tomato and other plants shell and all smashed up and mixed in the dirt. I've thought about throwing them at some noisy vehicles racing up and down the road we live on at 3 a.m.

They work best frozen, when used as a weapon.

Different food banks follow different rules. You never know until you ask. Sometimes it can help to ask your priest, pastor, minister, whatever you call them. They are all the time being asked for help. They may know a food bank that will take them or they may know individuals that can use the help.

I made a self serve stand on the road. My wife bakes sourdough as well, so we put that up there and our extra veggie starts in the spring - or pretty much whatever else we want to sell from the "farm". We get about 7 dozen a day to sell, and average $4 or so per dozen (we just do a donation model of pricing on the eggs). We have five sons under 12, so the eggs have been something they have taken on. They just pay me for the feed and I allow the to keep whatever else they earn unless they need cartons or whatever else. There is also a variable rate daddy tax each week which they despise. Get used to it little ones! Someone is always after what you earn!

All and all it the little stand earns about $400/week in the spring/summer and everything sells out before 10am as long as we get the sign to the main road by 8am letting folks know it is loaded up. So not bad.
