Topic of the Week - When Do Pullets Begin Laying?

My barred rock started laying last week and loves to sing about!

My Brahmas are also laying, but the shells are soft and today they both decided to lay their eggs outside in the grass. They have both lain eggs for 2 weeks, but they always do it on the same day in the same area. Roosting bar, nest, grass... Geez..

Congrats, I'm happy and a little jealous, my 21 week old BCM still hasn't laid

any day now....

Thanks. I have a few ceramic eggs from tractor supply in the boxes. I dont think the girls are quite ready yet but im trying to get ready anyway

how old are they? I'd even start adding oyster shell in a separate container. My girls not laying are pecking at them.

Buff orps at about 20 weeks and and the barred rocks are 18 weeks. I have oyster shell in a separate container but it doesn't seem to be going over to well. I'm expecting they take it as they need it. I can wait. I'm not sure that I'll even get an egg this year.

ugh. Are BO pullet eggs smaller and different colors than they will be when they're older? Out of curiosity of course, have a BA egg that looks the color of BO egg will be & BA hasn't laid since.

Pullet eggs do tend to be smaller and color can vary in shade a bit.

Usually around 16 weeks or so.
