Found this on a cockerel. They've been sparring a bit but typically 5 seconds worth. This was either that or a pullet who is getting awful grabby.

He's isolated right now in the brooder as of course the pullets would love to remove that piece. Spike the Faverolles cockerel keeps calling the girls to come eat it :hmm.

I'll get blue cote shortly. I'm guessing I'll have to cut that off? How much will it bleed?

He's not going to like it and yes, it will bleed like a bugger but I would suggest getting some things together....a good sharp pair of scissors, disinfectant, lint free cloth or kitchen towel, corn starch, neosporin and blukote.

It's probably easier with two people. Hold him firmly, making sure you have good control of his wings.....wrapping a towel round his body might help. Snip the hanging flap of skin from the wattle, then immediately pinch the wound for a minute or two to stem the bleeding. If it doesn't stop, apply the corn starch. Leave him alone to really, truly stop bleeding and 'clot up' for a bit, applying more corn starch if necessary. Once the bleeding has properly stopped, gently wipe with disinfectant, removing the corn starch, to leave a clean wound. Apply a little Neosporin (without painkiller) and then spray with BluKote. Keep him separated from the flock for 24 hours to allow the wound to really seal and hopefully prevent further bleeding if it gets knocked.

He should heal up quickly but keep an eye on it for infection, especially as he may be dipping it in water when he drinks. Re-apply BluKote as and when necessary to keep the others off him xxx

Oh thank you! Once I saw that they weren't going to leave that alone I started to stress a bit. Ok quite a bit.

I'll have to go out for Blu cote anyway, should I get styptic powder or do you think corn starch is better? It'll certainly hurt less.

I can get help but ugh on cutting that off. Seems it'll have to be done, no way that piece isn't going to be a problem.

I use horizontal nipples so that's one less way he'll hurt it anyway.

OyVey!!
Agrees with cutting it off.

Cornstarch works well IME...
...had to use it in an emergency (ran out of blood stop when cutting dogs nails) never bought blood stop again it works so good.

I would just get it cut and bleeding to stop, then leave it alone.
Keeping him segregated for a day or maybe two.... but reintegration......

I can keep him in the brooder so hes right there but I think there could still be fighting.

This is the same bird who had the upper respiratory thing. Clutz

There could be more fighting...wonder why they were fighting to begin with?
Is that your only male?

No I have 3. He crowed for the first time today. I was right there, sure didn't look like much, no one has spurs yet. I'm afraid maybe the Brahma bit him.
