Well, I finally took the plunge and ordered chickens! I am a total newbie but have been reading everything I can, including these boards, for the past few months. I'm in Illinois and just bought a 100 year old farmhouse on 5 acres. My husband and I have been checking out the chicken coop plans here and trying to figure out what and how big to build.

Very excited to be here, everyone seems do helpful. I've joked about having chickens for years and can't wait to finally do it! We ordered from Mcmurray Hatchery, and decided to go with Black Astralorps, Barred Rocks, and their rainbow layer collection (for fun). We have a teenager and a toddler who I think are going to really enjoy the chicks. We are also expecting a baby this summer, so life is going to be quite interesting this year!

Hello and WELCOME to BYC!

Build the BIGGEST chicken coop you can - chicken math usually strikes once you see all the wonderful varieties of chickens!

I have used McMurray - their chicks are usually nice and healthy - and friendly. However, a word of warning, the hatchery Barred Rock roosters can be mean. If you bought any roosters, when you raise them - handle the barred rocks the most and don't let them be aggressive towards you or your children. I was about 11 when we got our first chickens, I loved the chicks, and I still do.

Congratulations on entering the world of chickens, your life will never be the same once you get a taste of your own fresh chicken eggs. You will never go back to store bought again.

hi prairiegirl70,
I'm also new to the site and just moved to country too. Haven't ordered any chicks yet, but I'm planning to get a few Buff Orpingtons and maybe Black Australorps and Barred Rocks too. Just got a McMurray catalog yesterday and it's already spindled and marked up. So many choices! Good luck with your flock!
