The hubs and I will be moving to Pickens county in a month or so and are super excited about getting chickens! Are there breeds that fare better in the Upstate than others? Any particular resources I should know about in my area? We know we can't know it all before we start but I'm trying to find as much as I can beforehand to try and somewhat limit surprises. TIA for any tips and I look forward to reading about everyone's adventures in chicken keeping :)

Hi! Welcome!

You may want to have a look around in this forum to decide which type coop is best for your space/ climate and to understand how much space you will need per chicken. How much time you have for daily care is important in your choices a well. You can type anything in the search bar like "how much space does each chicken need"

Next, different breeds can be so different. Some calm and sweet, coop up well, some, not so much. Some lay tons of huge eggs, some not so much. Along with all combinations in between. Decide what you want and what works for you.

Here are 2 links for you to research different breed characteristics prior to purchase.
Here's a great thread that discusses the various breed characteristics.

Here's a good chart as well.

Best of luck to you and congratulations!

Well, it's a more rare species but Egyptian Fayoumis are gorgeous and prefer a nice windproof place in the winter. Mine is much smaller than the other 2.5 month olds and she is a princess. I think they are good with heat but no expert..
