Last night I cut up a milk carton and put some play sand in it for my 2 day olds. They've been in and out of it all day! Right now there are 4 pecking around while the other 5 try to force their way in and its not unusual to see a couple of them sleeping in it. I may have to add a second one, LOL!

PICS! We are fuzzy butt pic addicts around here. Can't describe a cute chick scenario and not include pics! That's just wrong!

Sorry, LOL! I'm working on it- they're all taking a nap in the chicky-puddle. I'll grab the camera the next time they're up & playing!

Give them a slightly larger box of sand and you will see their first dust baths . They are hilariously funny. Sand was flying all over the place. Gloria Jean

I'm guessing the sandbox comes out after they have figured out their world so they don't eat the sand rather than their food?
Why not use sand for the litter, that way you can clean up with a kitty litter scoop?

They eat the sand, dust bathe in the sand and scratch it out of the container. I also put a couple of fireplace logs in for them to 'roost' on and the light shines on it.....sometimes they fall asleep on it and tip over onto their beaks. Then I put a good size rock in the brooder.....one I would have used to make my flower bed.....they get up on it and fight to be the king of the rock. Then I put a board on a couple of bricks....it is just high enough they can run under it and they get up on top of it.

Things for entertainment......and they are fun to watch!

Yep, they definitely need a bigger dustbath box. An old baking pan or small kitty litter pan works great for this. Throw in a clump of dirt from outside while you're at it (so long as it's pesticide free).
If you have access to some small mealworms or crickets, "hide" some of them in the dirt or sand too. Awesome chickie entertainment and it'll keep them from getting bored and attempting to destory their brooder; if they haven't started that already. Just be sure and give them some grit for any crunchy food.
Thanks for sharing the pics
