Totally distraught. My bird is dead and I have no clue what happened.

I just came outside to find a chicken laying on the ground. It looked like she was sun bathing, but there’s no sun out today. It’s fairly chilly. Then it looked like she was choking? All of a sudden she started flopping around. She did it a couple of times then stopped. She was dead. The other girls surrounded her which was just heartbreaking. What happened? I checked down her throat and didn’t see any blockage. Now I’m worried there’s something else going on and it’s going to affect my other girls. Any advice would be appreciated.

Soooo very sorry! That happened to me too.

As painful as it is, there doesn't even seem to be some lesson in it for ensuring that it doesn't happen again.

Take what consolation you can from knowing that you gave that chicken a good life with room to move and good quality food and all the affection you could give. It's life. It's OK. You did fine!

I’m in upstate New York. The chickens aren’t free range, so everything they have access to now they’ve had access to for awhile. So I don’t think that’s it.
