I am totally new to raising chickens and my chicks are about 4 weeks old. A neighbor said to make sure we wash our hands after handling them and the eggs due to Salmonella. Do "home-grown" chicks carry that?

You are more likely to get it from a commercial egg but good hand washing habits are a must when raising poultry. You don't want to spread any germs around if you can help it.

I do not wash my eggs.

I do wash my hands.

Yes to what MissPrissy said.

We wash our hands before handling the chicks (not adult chickens) so we don't give them any germs.

We wash our hands after handling any chick/chicken so we don't get any germs.
