Well kids it's about that time of the year when people need to start thinking about how many animals they want to hold during the winter and how many animals are going to encounter the pneumatic hammer.
The chickens and guineas are relatively easy to figure out but with my ducks it's getting tricky. I've narrowed down the types of breeds that I want to focus on raising. Muscovies, Indian Runners, and any single birds that I feel sorry for at fur and feather swaps. Anyone else who raises their birds for meat, or are just encountering economical crunches and want to conserve on feed, having to think about this?
I'm going to keep 4 khakis, 1 drake and 3 hens, 3 muscovies, 1 drake and 2 hens, 2 cayugas, 1 drake and 1 hen, 1 runner drake, 1 call hen, 1 magpie hen, 3 hens of mixed breed origin, and Tate if he comes back after dissappearing this afternoon.
Barring any further incidents with local predators that will leave me with 4 drakes and 11 hens. 10 hens if you don't count my call duck who has no one to mate with. I think I should look to add a few more hens to the flock at that last swap this fall. What do you think?
