I think if you go have a heart to heart wiht them and explain the economic benefits of pellets vs crumbles they will see it your way and start eating pellets. Remember they are chickens and will do whatever it takes to please you.

Just in case you are not fluent in chicken, the conversation should go like this....

Cluck, cluck bok bbbboooookkkkk (this should be accompanied by raising of the neck feathers on the ooooookkkk syllable) bok booook bokkk bokkk (tail wiggling on the bokkk bokkk) followed by a long repeated crow. Not to loud or high pitched on the crowing though they will mistake it to mean something TOTALLY different & with this being a family forum I can't translate it for you.

IMHO winter time is not the time to get "tough" with your birds... all their reserves are going into keeping warm and dealing with temp swings etc.... (whatever reserves are left deal with pathogens etc.)... mix some cooked oatmeal with your feed >cook in water not milk (I specifically choose to mix in a portion of mash so they use less reserves processing it ) ...you dont need much > just enough to make it all clump together >this will take care of wastage...it helps with digestion and in my experience makes the pellets more "pallatable" (and they seem to like a warm breakfast!)

Yep, Pellets are the way to go. My kids wasted more than they ate on the crumbled laying mesh. Before I refill them I make sure there is none on the floor ( mean mommie).

I mix mine.....at first they wouldn't eat the pellets....so I mixed it with the duck feed so the ducks would eat it......now the chickens go into the duck coop and steal the pellets out of the crumbles! Go figure! So now they all get it mixed...if I run out of one...they won't snub their nose at either!!! Of course they only eat processed food when they're out of bugs, greens, etc!
