My dad always had chickens, typically RIRs. I tried to raise my husbands interest, but he wasn't enthused about backyard chickens until he met someone with chickens in their own backyard. Shortly after, he built me a beautiful coop and a separate chicken run, which we can attach. We have four hens. We have had three since they were chicks: Americauna, Buff Orphington, and Barred Rock (the mean leader). A couple months later we added a 3-4 month old Silkie. She slowly became the odd chicken out and was desperately trying to lay on unfertilized eggs. She was broody to the point of obsession, even though we continued to take the eggs away. We picked up some fertilized Paint Silkie eggs and one chick hatched yesterday. (Fingers crossed on the off chance of some late hatchers).

If she doesn't what you can maybe do is buy a day-old chick and remove the eggs from under the hen at night and replace it with the chick. She wouldn't know the chick's not "hers" and your lone chick would have a buddy to grow up with.

Well, she is now laying on just one egg. I'm just going to let nature take it's course. ...keeping my fingers crossed for one more, but thankful for the one pretty chick. Thanks for all the advice. I'll let you know if one more hatches.
