OldHippieChick: Are you a hippie too? I'm from Oregon and my husband is always calling me a hippie (probably due to interests in organic food, recycling, gardening and... chickens). What kind of chickens do you have? We are in the Keller/FW area.

We just have one chick from the last batch, but I just received my new incubator and eggs in the mail (10 Silkie, 4 Swedish Flower, 2 Millie Fleur Leghorn). We're having a competition, the Silkie vs. the incubator.

I was not quite old enough to be a real hippie. I'm in my 50s now. I grew up in CA but I've always been attracted to OR and WA and the PNW. I'm pretty liberal minded compared to the majority in Tarrant Co so I'm comfortable being called a hippie - even though I enjoy baths and keep a job lol and I could pass for normal in a crowd ;). You're just up the road from me. I'm near Western Center.

If you do facebook, do a search for North Ft Worth Food Swap. It's a small group of women that meet every four to six weeks and trade home made, home canned, foraged, or crafted items. One of the members just started hatching her own chicks. If you can or grow anything, you might find it's a great way to meet similar minded people. It's not strictly organic but it's more about reviving the lost art of the barter system. Some bake or crochet or are good with plants or canning and we all really enjoy the socializing as well. You can spot me easily - I'm the one with the buddha dog avatar. I'm new to it all. I just found the group when I started raising my girls and needed to find a way to trade extra eggs.

I've got 1 black copper marans, 2 blue copper marans, and one loud mouthed black sex link hen. No roosters... I just keep my girls for eggs and it's my way of protesting the cruelty of corporate run chicken farms. I've only been doing it since early spring so I'm a novice urban outlaw. See ya :).

Jen, I'm not old enough to be a true hippie either (I'm 28). My husband just isn't use to a push for organic shopping, gardening, and owning animals which produce food! The Food Swap sounds awesome. I could make things grow in Oregon, but I can't seem to make anything thrive here, so I'm not sure if I could find any home grown food to swap. I could probably bake something or maybe bring eggs. I'd love to swap for fertile chicken eggs, but I'm not sure if anyone would be able to do that. Thanks for letting me know about the food swap; I'd love to check it out sometime.
 
hi ya know that`s like in real life we all want to be with others and as the others do not want to be with her she is trying to make her own flock . good luck with trying to interduce a new chick at night tryed it one time she killed it but my have been how I did it did it in the day. think i`d try getting egg`s that would hatch. if I`d started sooner this year I`d donate you some but I just started back and have found that my bird have started thir molt so Im not lookimg to get meny egg`s for some time . I have 3rir`s an 2 easter egger`s for now
 
Well the next swap is Friday at 7PM in Justin TX at the Classy Cactus Antique Mall. If you just want to come and mingle and get a feel for it, that's really ok. But if you decide to bring something to swap - it's WAY more fun :). I'm bringing eggs and some Texas Pecans I gathered yesterday. I am also making some pine cone fire starters and might make a couple of other things. I'll probably bring a bottle of tobasco peppers and a jar or two of jalapenos from my back yard.. There's always room for more eggs, especially this time of the year when everyone is cooking and baking more. If you get into it, you'll be surprised just how many ideas you can come up with. Anything home made, home grown, or foraged is the goal. We've got someone who makes soaps, sometimes there are plants there, sometimes there are craft items, there's always something interesting.
