Town referred me to health department and they said chickens lead to pigs???

Ok - so the township bylaws specify 'no fowl or rabbits' (random??). I approached the town and the administrator told us that it was not a town decision but it was a health department directive. I called the health inspector who said it was a town decision but that it would not be passed as if they let chickens in that will lead to rat infestations and pig farms... Where do I start ?? I dont feel that I am dealing with a particularly large amount of intelligent thought or rationale here...

Incidentally surrounding townships permit chickens...

For nothing else, at least your post made me laugh - thank you!! I confess to being at a bit of a loss as to how to negotiate with this type of mentality! I feel it should be easy as obviously they aren't overly bright, however, that level of thought process appears to muddy the path to reason !

First, ask to see the specific regulations for both the health department and the town. It could well be covered in both.

or neither. Then provide a plethora of information, including code and ordinances from numerous other locations that allow backyard chickens, not commercial chicken or pig facilities.

They might as well say that dogs lead to wolves roaming the streets...

if you can, get the regulations word-for-word and in writing. then, if they are actually as ridiculous as they sound, try to get some from nearby townships and see if you can use those to get yours changed. don't know if it will help, but it can't hurt.

Never take "no" from someone who cannot say "yes." You were probably talking to the wrong person. Just a guess. Get the zoning code, health code and pour over if for the words "fowl" or "chickens." Sometimes there is no actual zoning code dealing with chickens either way, because it has not come up yet.
