Hi!

Is there an issue with staining the outside of a coop with an oil-based stain? I know the stuff is pretty toxic and smelly, but I’m thinking if it’s on the outside it might be ok?

We use all no-VOC paint in our home and so I have a bit of a chemical phobia going on.
But I found a super nice coop on Craigslist that has everything I’d wantit’s just they used an oil-based Valspar brand stain on the exterior.

thanks in advance for your thoughts/wisdom!

It will be fine.
All the volatiles are long gone and the stain penetrates the wood.

I think it was stained a while ago! That’s a good question though I will ask!

It will be fine. Even if you had stained it yesterday, the exterior would have little impact if any on the chickens.

Had the inside been stained yesterday, I might keep them out for 24-48 hrs but a properly ventilated coop will provide sufficient air flow.

Anything stained awhile ago is fine.

Agree. Generally wait 48-72 hours and have good ventilation after staining an interior with oil based product before occupation. Just completely redid my HW floors myself and this is what several contractor friends said.
