Tractor supply chick days?

Thanks Doc, I grew up in Florida and moved back recently. 50 miles is the difference between suffering a Cat 3 and flying a kite in a summer squall. Yes, i take reasonable preparations (honestly, I'm always ready, and we've had a lot of practice between the hurricanes and the fires we've lived thru), and follow the forecast tracks religiously, but not all hurricanes are the same, and not all preparations are "reasonable".

Not sure what natural disasters you routinely experience in the VA area, but I'm sure you have your share of experiences where my reaction to their unknowns may seem disproportionate to their risks, in your more experienced view.
Hurricane Sandy, which killed all of my animals and destroyed my property, had a 350 mile diameter. Being with 50 miles of landfall meant you dealt with hurricane winds for 125 miles worth of hurricane for e minimum (175 radius minus 50 miles you mentioned). How many hurricanes with smaller than a 50 mile radius did you deal with in your extensive experience?

Are Tractor Supply chicks inoculated against Marick disease ? Thanks

TSC has repeatedly said on social media that their chicks are NOT vaccinated, but that their suppliers have vaccinated and carefully maintain the breed stock. Apparently, the theory is that if the parents don't have it, and the cycle is closed to new introductions, that their chicks won't carry it into your flock.

Beyond that, i make no representations.

Truly sorry you experienced that Doc. Sandy was a nightmare. Michael too. The typical hurricane, not those monsters (for which I'd not buy 30 gallons of water, a few loaves of bread, and "hunker down" as preparation) has a wind field around a 100 mile diameter - 50 miles is the difference between being in the eye, and being at tropical storm force winds. "My" storms have included David, Dianna just off the coast, Kate, Andrew (I was in Tampa then, most of the southern portion of the state took the brunt of it), Georges, then Charlie, Frances, Ivan. We left the state not long after that, and I readily admit we've been quite fortunate - but stand by my belief that 50 miles makes a huge difference in the strength of a hurricane, and neither Cat 1 nor Cat 2 winds particularly concern me in a well constructed modern home.

There are a few other storms I was too young to remember.

If you cant get chicks from TSC, you can order them online from a reputable hatchery. They come in the mail, but you will have to go pick them up at the post office. The P.O. will call you the day they arrive, so be ready and watch your tracking like a hawk.
Thanks i know that’s just makes me nervous. I can hold off until my other chicks get older. I live out rural and don’t like that the post office calls you in the morning to go get them etc. Also I only want 4-6. I’m a small time farmer 😁

I think I am DONE getting chicks from TSC. This spring cinched the decision for me. It's tempting to pick up a few when I'm there buying feed, but the quality of the chicks I've gotten from them is not good. And the employees, nice as they are here, don't know a thing about chickens. I've got congenital defects up to my ears this year, and am having to decide to cull or not. From now on, I will only be ordering chicks from reputable breeders. I've never been disappointed by getting chicks that way, even if I have to wait for them!

Not to mention the amount of roosters that you end up with, even in a bunch of what are supposed to be sex-linked pullets. *sigh* We bought 16 chicks, and ended up with 6 roosters. Not we had planned for, and after hand raising them, its heartbreaking trying to find them a new home. Just hoping they dont end up with a bad outcome. Never again for us, we will alsoo rder or hatch our own from now on.
