Tractor supply quarantining chicks?

I just called Tsc about some chicks and they said they are in quarantine until this afternoon, what would they quarantine for and for how long?

Well, I'd think not too long, or else they aren't "day old" chicks anymore. Standard suggested quarantine is 2 weeks to 30 days, from what I've read.

Maybe they want the chicks to get over shipping stress, so they look a bit more healthy. And then any that don't make it aren't in with the live ones.

They usually keep them in back for a day so that most that are put out to buy aren't going to keel over. Gives them a chance to do inventory and for the weaker ones to die off out of view for the public

Most do this or at least mine does for a day after they have arrived.

I called my TSC when they opened the other day and they said they just got the chicks in and they would be ready to sell at 12. They didn't use the term "quarantining" though, but I assumed they just meant they got them delivered early in the morning and wouldn't set them out until later. I bet they get some chicks dead on arrival, or weak on arrival, and that gives them some time to stabilize or not under the lights and with water and feed. I doubt they keep them in the back for long. It's pretty easy to tell when a chick is older than a few days because they start sprouting wing feathers, and I've seen some in the bins that barely have wing feathers. So I doubt they are keeping them in the back longer than a few hours to a day.

That would make sense. Yeah I was taken aback at first when she said “quarantine” but I think I get now what she was saying. I asked what breeds they had and she was very crabby with me and did not seem happy that I asked and then a few moments later hung up while I was on hold.

They get them all in boxes (like we do) and have to sort them.

My local TSC had sexed Welsimmers, but I could tell 1/4 of them were male. I think the hatchery must ship them knowing that. Not like you can return a cockerel to Hoover's when you buy him at TSC. Lol

My local feed store mostly just received chicks that people have ordered, so not huge #s at a time, and they always take a few hours to warm up the chicks and dip each one's beak into save a chick water, then they call everyone and have them come pick up their chicks.
