Tractor Supply?

sorry to hear you have a bad store. Not all of them are bad, neither are all the vendors that sell to them, the stores, nor the customers who buy from them.

Like I said, pet market is different than livestock.

Yeah, my TS is the total opposite. I go in, they always greet me, if I linger looking at chicks, they come over and tell me about the different breeds, see me in the aisles and check on me, the store is clean, NO DEAD ANIMALS. Definitely sounds like they very by store.

That is almst how we got into chickens to start with (the first one came with our house). Why is an impulse purchase a BAD thing? The only thing that would be bad is not caring for the animal, and that can happen even with a planned purchase. I PLANNED to purchase our first chicks for our sons Easter baskets. WHY is this wrong? Not caring for chicks (or ducks or any animal) would be wrong, but purchasing them? No! Give me a break!

Our store offers free classes in chicken care and raising chicks to the public every Saturday for 8 weeks in the Spring (I teach it...) to make sure folks have the opportunity to understand everything. When they get sick chicks they call and I go rescue them...etc. They keep the bins clean and well managed.

I wish everyone was conscientious and caring, but it's just not that way. I'm glad you care, because it's important that folks like you encourage others to try their best and to care about what happens in the world.

TS is a franchise, much like a McDonalds, or a Subway. So it is totally different from market to market. Some are AWESOME and some SUCK big time. I prefer the mom and pop feed stores that actually know what they are selling and pay attention to their stock.

Ditto. I don't actually get my chicks there, I buy all my supplies from my local Blue Seal, which is mom and pop owned. Well, just mom, no pop. I only go into TS to poke around, and occasionally they'll have a good deal on cat food, that's about it. But my location does seem to be friendly and clean though, unlike apparently the OP's location.

I called my local Tractor Supply to ask if they had got their chicks yet. They had, and when I asked the young lady what breeds they had, she was happy to tell me they had 3 breeds. Red, black and Bantanas(not a typo). I didn't even go see what they had.

I can't fault my TSC(s) either. I go to a variety of them to check out what they have, and because I like to "handle the merchandise" before I buy it, I like to purchase chicks from there. All of mine have a nice set up - the chicks together, and then surrounded by a nicely set up display of feeders, waterers, "brooder in a box", chicken care books and magazines, heat lights, everything. I actually have to go to a different section of the store for all the chicken supplies I get (big bags of feed, big feeders and waterers), but they have everything a starter needs.

I now also check for dead chicks and pasty butt, and I've not seen any on the chicks they have.

Our chick days run from March to May. Not just an easter buy.

The employees at the TSCs I go to might not be experts at chicken care, but most of them are pretty good in particular departments. They only have chicks for a few months, but they have fencing, repair, feed, and lawn supplies, and most employees are experts in one of those departments instead. I don't really expect them to hire on an expert for chicks only for a couple months.

Hatcheries sell to anyone as well, small animals sales, pet stores, back yard animal sellers and even craigs list. All we can do is try and educate people.
