Tractors

I use lidded plastic storage bins for nestboxes. So when my laying hens are in the tractor, I just pop in one of the nestboxes in case one of them gets in the mood to lay while they're out there. None of them is laying right now, though. They're brooding chicks.

I ordered 4 of the hoops, and am planning to make a 12 foot long tractor, simply because that's a stock length for the baseboards. The Farmtek website indicates that the hoops take 10 foot wide covering, so I'm assuming that's the length from one side of the hoop, over the top, down to the other side. That's the way I'm going to be running my hardware cloth. This time, I'm using 3 foot wide hardware cloth (because the frame is 3 feet tall, and will be a multiple of 3 in length, also), and I'll be splicing the seams with Loxit clips.

Well that will be good size tractor. Thanks for explaining. Helps me learn to think in construction perspective.

Yes it is helpful, thank you! It's great!! I love the practicality of it - wheels that slide off, hinges where the eggs are, gable ends that fold down - that's my kind of thinking!

Well, I came home today to find that my wonderful husband (who just came home after being at work for the past four days) has started a chicken tractor for me!! He's using stuff we had hanging around so it's similar to one I sent him an email picture of from this site. It uses poly pipe, some small tires on an axle that had been in the basement for a decade (originally saved to make a go-cart), leftover 2"x 3" fencing........ (to be con't. We'll see how it turns out.

Spangled Cornish,

This design inspired me originally. Thanks for that link. I printed it out. I may try making one myself just because it has such nice details that a newbie like myself can follow. I'm still not sure it's going to be enough information though,

My husband is still working on the hoop type design one he started. It's a good thing because my girls are tired of being cooped up.

There are a few details I want to get a better look at, lol.
Thanks!
