Just did something very similar with a speckled sussex who had been sitting on one egg for 21 days. THe egg was crushed while hatching; I think she is just an inexperienced mother. But I also went to TSC and bought 6 chicks which she is now tending as if they were her own. I love watching a mother hen with her chicks, it is the epitome of the word Motherhood! I hope today she starts to take them out around the yard, so fun to see mom with the chicks following behind!
God bless mama. And you too!! She has been thorough soo much and yet she still await to have responsibilities. I am hatching silkies on Thursday and I really hope I get a mama!!

I agree. She's my first hen to go broody - and we argued about it for quite a while before I gave in to her. When I found that the other hens were picking at her for refusing to budge from her spot in the coop, with no repercussions from her, I relented. She wore me down! LOL
What a sweet story. I wish one of my hens would go broody but they refuse. I bought chicks without knowing how hard it is to integrate new chicks with old chickens. Now I have to build a mini coop for my new ones and put it in my old one so everyone can slowly get to know each other for several weeks when the chicks get old enough to take care of themselves. I hope that it works.
