Training Chickens

Great thread animallover!! My chicks were tame and trained by the time they were three days old. It really is worth it especially when as they get older you need to catch them and clip their wings and stuff. Here's what I wrote on chicken training:

Ours are mostly pretty sweet. Some are naturally more skittish than others. The only truly wild ones we had were our original Key West rescue chickens. Several generations down, some are still very skittish but will run up to you for treats but do not want to be picked up even though they were cuddled as chicks. Some of them are true snugglers and feel slighted if you don't pick them up when they run up to you.

I do believe chickens can be trained and I have observed our older roosters giving lessons to the younger ones, teaching them to call the girls for treats, alert for predators, whip butt on stray cats etc.

I handled all my chickens regularly when they were little and still hold them often. One hen runs up to me for cuddles, and another clucks angrily if I touch her. I guess it all depends on the underlying character.

I paid special attention to one particular chick and experimented with training techniques. Within a few weeks she stopped on command and hopped in and out of my lap. She's such a smart little thing!
