This is for all of us that have geese coming into breeding season and beyond. We are seeing changes in behavior and are confused as to why our sweet cuddly gander we raised from a gosling is being so mean. There is hope if we will be consistent in our training. If we want a life long commitment with our geese this is the only way to make it work.

Thank you, Miss Lydia for pointing out that thread. It'll take awhile to read it all. So far the 2 year old geese I own haven't been aggressive, but I want to know what to do if they start that.

I think the best thing I ever did was to teach the geese to come when they are called. Occasionally they get close to the road when they are out free ranging. It's not a busy road and the neighbors do watch out for all the critters around here, but I feel it's too dangerous. So I call the geese and they come back up the hill.

Ganders can be especially hard headed during mating season they get very protective of their mates and the females can be too they are good parents but sometimes they will carry it too far and we have to teach tem they cannot attack us or our families or friends. Or our dogs etc lol

I have African Grays. To train them to come when they are called, use food. They learned quickly that when I called "Here, goose" that they had a treat coming.

Corn makes a good treat. Not too much.

I have trained all my birds. Even the chickens come running when I call for them. I start to train the chickens when they are little chicks. Every time I put food in their pen I say "here, chicky" and they learn quickly that the words mean food. We used to be snowbirds and my next door neighbors took my chickens for the winter. I came home after being gone six months, got their pen ready, noticed that the neighbor was letting the chickens (his and mine) free range. Yelled "here, chicky" and all six of my girls came running across the field to me.

Great! I have chickens too, when I walk towards them with the "white bucket" (that means food) the come running right away, (even if there is no food inside). It could be useful for getting the chickens into the coop at night when they think it's much to early...
