Anyone here train or have trained working dogs? I have a blue heeler/Catahoula cross that I had trained and a purebred border collie that was also trained. They're not the best, too timid around cows but they'll work my goats! I'm having to re work them a little bit because the guy that trained them only used really stale dog broke calves on them.
I have a 6 month old Kelpie/border collie mix that already seems like he will work, he definitely shows shows interest with the goats. I was thinking about getting some sheep to get him started, I want to have a really good working dog! Any advice on starting your own? I've watched a lot of YouTube videos and seen a lot of different methods but would love to hear from people on here!

Following. Just because I'm very curious. I've done a lot of dog training...guide dog for the blind puppy raising...I have trained my rattie to rat but leave the chickens be....but I've not trained a dog to herd. My sheltie (may he RIP) did not get the herding instincts that his mother had, he was a big softie, so my hopes of getting him to herd the chickens failed utterly. (I even took him to a screening workshop for herding....but he was excellent in agility. LOL).

I'd love to hear what others say.

I'd love to hear what works for you. I have a young cattle dog mix that has the instinct but I'm not at the point where I have time to train her to do it! I hope to eventually.

There is a book called The Farmer's Dog. It ought to be helpful. If it is out of print you might be able to find a copy on eBay.
