Transitioning from roofed to roofless run

Pics
Aww they are adorable!!! With their squished little butts sitting down! And "park" is a great and hilarious way to put it

LOL!! My husband just did this!!

Second snow since the umbrellas went up. Unlike last time though, this snow fell calmly and politely downward instead of blowing in from all directions. And it was only a couple of inches, so no collapsed umbrellas. There’s just one square of snow on the ground where there’s nothing overhead, the rest of the run is snow-free and the chickens are happy. Not a single footprint on the square of snow though 😄

The covered dust bath has done its job, and its contents are dry! There’s even a little snow-free path to it, created by the coop’s roof overhang. It seems to be enough - I saw one of the chickens carefully walk along the little path and go into the dust bath 🥰

This thread isn't that old so I'm going to comment!

What beautiful chickens! Love the ones in the second pic.
I love that you were able to use an umbrella. I passed one up that was being tossed on the side of the road and I regret it! It's super snowy and windy there, but my dollar store umbrella has helped in a pinch.

(Also, I don't like your neighbour. 🙃 )

Thank you! Yes, the umbrellas have been crucial, for both snow and rain. They’ve really taken a beating, but are still functional. They’re bent and torn up and look like crap, but that’s what the neighbor gets to look at now that he made me take my beautiful roof down 😈

Hey k0k0shka,
I lost track of this thread in the beginning. What a crap to have such a neighbor and a local government that doesn’t support its residents who where first and lived in harmony without having rules and regulations. :hugs

I didn’t read it the whole story. But if there is anything you still want to improve because the umbrellas won’t live another year just ask.

Btw, don’t plant ivy for cover . My neighbours did , for over growing the property fence . I hate it because it grows everywhere and its nasty work to eliminate because its poisonous and I got allergic from it.

ps: I don’t know if anyone mentioned that a ‘roof’ below 1.50 meters doesnt count as a roof (where I live). And solar panels are a great roof too for chickens to keep dry. What are the regulations on solar panels in you’re community?

Hi Kokoshka! How are things going with Mr. and Mrs. Crabby? We're super busy here with the flock, building a 3 bay compost setup with salvaged pallets and yard work/clean up, but are taking a little time to whip up this cute Peeps cookie Easter chicken coop we found at Walgreens! (Just adding our own colored royal icing to customize). LOL, blew out and colored a bunch of goose eggs! I think of you and your hens often! Happy Easter! www.thecountryladyantiques.com

My 7-month-old picnic fly has just surrendered to a hail storm -- lots of little slits all over the degraded fabric. (I should be able to put a tarp over the frame when I need it again).

When you replace your umbrellas you might look into commercial restraurant supply houses to get something intended to be out in all weather for years. :)

I like the fence with green leaves there, looks nice, what is that, looks like Morning Glory vines? My chickens would probably be pecking them, real or fake.
