I found someone in southern/southwestern Minnesota who is willing to get me one single rooster, which I was looking for! Its a pretty healthy drive for me that I can't really justify doing for one rooster, but does anyone have experience shipping one mature bird? This would be going from SW MN to SE IA so most likely a quick ship, just wondering if anyone had experience with something similar. Any pet taxi like services available in this region that anyone could recommnend?

I have a hard time with the idea of shipping birds to begin with, much less a single bird of a species that is as social as quail. Would it be worth it for you to add a hen to the order?

I guess I can ask? This is just a private party I found that happens to raise quail, not a farmer or breeder. She said she had extra roos she needed to get rid of to get her ratios proper, so I’m not sure how keen she would be on getting rid of a hen also, but I can see about it.

Supposing I could get a M/F pair, is it possible to ship them?

It's possible, but there's always a risk. The other possibility would be to have them ship two males in case one doesn't make it. Then you have the choice of boys and can eat the other one.

I had live birds shipped to me once, and will never do it again. Way too stressful watching the tracking constantly, delays, etc. One arrived deceased and I swore never again. I'd drive, if I were you, or find someone closer to you that has an extra roo.
