Trap Smart Coons

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg. Now I've got another set of juvenile coons that have become trap smart somehow. They are attacking the garbage cans and have foiled the trap working together as a pair (One sitting in the doorway and another working his way in). I can usually catch them in the act, but I refuse to shoot at night time when I can't see if I have a clear shot. My hopes is that when I hear the trap snap shut tonight I let the dogs loose to tree and then I go hunting

I now know what you are talking about. We just had a trap out on Sunday and the darn coon rolled the trap onto it's side so it could go in without the trap shutting. So my husband attached some eye bolts onto a large piece of plywood and it is strapped down. Two more coons down now. Someone must be releasing them out here because it's the country. I have 5 neighbors all within a mile or two of me that also raise chickens. The last thing we need is more racoons.

I'm wondering if the same thing happened here. While I was out of state the kids told me about several cars that slowed and stopped in the road next to the property

I've never seen two yearling's tag team a trap before. Just goes to show ya, when you've thought you've seen it all...........

I have stupid coons..they just walk right in. Good for me...bad for them

Question ~ I read that if you remove a raccoon, a new one will move into that spot? True? Can you ever really get rid of them?

We gave up on the humane traps. Basically worthless IMO.
Now only use inhumane ones that work everytime. You can bait/set them in several different ways. Then I go out and send them on their way with my 12 gauge or crossbow.

I use leg hold traps & even snares for trap smart pedators.

Just make sure they are legal to use where you are.

I think there's a couple of wildlife biologists who help out here in P&P... maybe they can help?

My biggest problem seems to be the dumped ones. Reason I use the hav-a-harts is because of the barn cats. After getting the garden hose inside the trap a time or two they stay away for a while and I can go after coons... but those guys are working pets... I usually have to trap them once or twice a year to get them to the vet for shots etc. I hate getting tore up trying to catch them by hand. They aren't tame at all
