travelling with chickens

I would use a tow behind trailer (not a u-haul) if you have a horse trailer that would be perfect. You could make some cages with wood frames and wire covering place them in there and heard the little chickies in. If your not as lucky to have a horse trailer i hope someone else can help!

People taking their birds long distances to shows use all sorts of carriers, everything from "official" chicken show cages to cardboard boxes to rabbit/small animal cages to dog crates. I would suggest trying to keep each bird separate as they sometimes begin pecking or fighting each other, and you probably will not be able to stop and intervene--if you even know it is going on. For my wire cages, I have built dividers that I attach to the back side with zip ties (so that it is hinged at the back), and once the bird is in place, fasten the front with gem clips or more wire ties. Show cage cups are accessible through the wire for filling, and with wire sides, there is more ventilation. Cardboard boxes or other solid sided container needs ventilation holes. Sweet PDZ or food grade DE will absord spills; Sweet PDZ is better at removing odors as it chemically alters the ammonia. Both are safe should the bird eat it.

If you have waterfowl, they are usually moved in lidded rubbermade tubs half filled with water, with lots of air holes all around the top edge.

I have a traveling question as well.

There are no chicken vets down here to help one of my hens so we have to go to a specialist two hours away. The travel to our local vet has been very hard on our sick hen, who has been panting, and she makes herself all worked up on the ride. Normally, she isn't like that.

What would be the easiest way going about this? Should I take her two sisters with us as well to make her feel more comfortable? Is the elevation driving up the mountain going to hurt her? They are all under a year old and are spoiled babies. Currently while writing this, they are cuddling under my armpit. Thanks guys! Also, this is my first post :)

I have been getting ready to travel 1, 200. miles with my baby chicks. I have six which r now 21 days old. Bought two lrg. bird cages and placed them in them on Tuesday. They r doing fine and have adjusted well. Maintaing a 75-80 temp.. I leave on the 23.. Thought I 'd place straw in the cages for the trip and remove perches. I usually due 5-6 hundred miles a day....any advice would help. I plan to keep them covered with a sheet. So will start that in a few days.
