Trays or lay flat for lockdown???

I did the laydown method for my first hatch, it scared me to see the eggs rolling around, so for my next hatch I will use the egg carton method, also have a 1588 to incubuate/turn and a 1602 for lockdown! Keeps the 1588 a lot cleaner.

i went on lock down last night... i couldn't use cartons, because i put metal cloth in between them to isolate certain eggs... i want to know what is what at hatch... don't want to mix my blue salmons with my blue barred and so on... but next hatch, is going to be just mille fleurs, and self blues... so i'm gonna try the egg flats...

this is also my first hatch... i'm nervous and skurrrrd!!!...

I had the same issue - on one of my hatches, I cut slits in the top of the carton, and corresponding slits in cardboard pieces - put it all together and it divided everything into two halves.

Don't be Skuuurd!!!

LOL, my friend two houses down split the eggs with me and he also has 17 eggs in his hovabator... also went on lockdown last night... he already has a pip... he also seperated them too... i'll upload a pic in a minute...

it's funny, because the egg that pip'd, is a salmon from my neighbor... and in my bator, i have one salmon egg that is rocking back and forth... they're early birdys...

edit: here's his setup...

now that im down to half of the eggs i started with i will probobly try the styrofoam cup method. Maybe make the walls a litter higher so the chickies have to stay in their cups. i dont know, that seems kind small for them...but then again they are silkies, augh ive got to stop thinking! i still have another two weeks to figure it out. Hell if i only have one egg left by day 18 then i wont have much to worry about now will i?

first time hatcher stress.

You don't want to make the cup walls higher - my chicks (bantams) basically "fall" out and onto the surface of the hatcher when they climb out of the shells. You certainly don't want them pipping and pipping head-on into the egg carton. I cut the cups down as far as possible - usually only the bottom half of the egg is in the cup. The top portion of the egg needs to be totally exposed so they can pip, zip and pop the top with nothing in their way.

no no no, not egg carton cup, styrofoam cups, like ones you drink out of at parties and stuff. they could hatch in their own little "rooms" that way...does that make sense?
