I built the same one. Works great! No, they aren't water proof but I plopped a plastic boot tray over mine with some bricks and now it mostly is

Oh, and I made mine narrower than the plans otherwise the boot tray wouldn't be working so well. Didnt' plan it that way, is just how it worked out.

I have mine under a tarp in the run - I use the tarp for extra shade for the girls and a bit of rain protection anyway, but if it wasn't there I'd have rigged up a bit of a lean-to to put over the treadle feeder. Mine has been rained on several times anyway (sometimes our summer storms have sideways rain) but I gave it a good few coats of exterior paint that's guaranteed to keep wood protected and weatherproof, and I'm happy to report that even with the rains and our terrible humidity here, the food inside has stayed bone dry the entire time (and since I'm down to two chooks it can stay in the feeder quite some time before I need to refill it).
