Hi! My chicks have been doing lovely, and I’m looking to start rewarding their good behavior when I have them out socializing with me! What are some snacks and treats I could give them?

They seem to like millet a lot! I decided on a whim to try cracking some to offer them (I have it on-hand for my parakeet!) Is it okay to give them millet as a treat?

I don't know about millet. A really great treat that my chickens love is their regular food, wetted down into a mash. They think it's candy!

A nice thing about this is it doesn't give them anything that dilutes the nutrition of their feed. I sometimes "spice it up" a bit with greens, fruit bits, BOSS, whatever I have on hand.

I’ve heard a lot of people do that! Is there anything in particular that people eat that I absolutely shouldn’t mix up for them?

I train exclusively with millet. Guinea Fowl LOVE it and chickens like ANYTHING that they know they don't get too often. As far as it messing them up nutritionally, I mean, sure. You eat a bag of Lays you're gonna feel like crap. You know how much 'regular' food they eat. Treat the millet like chips and you're good.

My 4 wk old chicks LOVE LOVE LOVE mash made from chick starter. They get it in the evening after playtime out of the brooder. They seem to recognize the dish and come flocking back to the brooder which makes rounding them up for bed so easy.
