Treating Botulism? **UPDATED*RIP Spike

i'm thinking a new thread might help- now my thoughts on culling are i will give them the best chance possible- if they show a desire to live, which your girl is doing by eating, i say give them all the help you can. as far as feeding, try feeding her some baby oatmeal, it will give her extra calories and energy- i hand fed spike for awhile before he could eat on his own. Also, i would add poly-vi-sol liquid vitamins, a couple drops twice a day, since silkies have a tendency to vitamin deficiencies- hope that helps- she is a beauty and give her her chance

thank you for answering. i have been giving her nutri drench twice a day. she likes that best of anything i give her. she wont touch the pea or oatmeal/with pear baby food but likes the apple sauce baby food. i will try the powdered oatmeal idea.

ok with you if i see what three horses says, too, and then start the new thread?

How old is your baby, and was it vaccinated at the hatchery?

I'd keep up the vitamins. Try adding something like polyvisol, and I'd recommend a probiotic of some type as well. But these things take time.

Is the spot hard, or soft, or like an air-sac?

i got her as a "year old" in August from a girl who's friend, a breeder, gave this pair to her, so i dont know about vaccinations. i dont think its mareks, her legs/wings arent paralyzed and her head isnt to the left.

i will start her back on yogurt. the spot seems firm.

Spike is pooping normal for the first time since this all started- no other major change as far as movement goes, she does seem to have laryngitis, occassional chirps then just beak movement- gave her a bath today which she seemed to enjoy then sat in the sun for a bit while she dried, so she wouldn't get a chill- should i be giving her Vit B or seleneum? someone suggested that on top of the vitamins she is getting now

You could do, but if you're giving polyvisol (I can't remember now) you shouldn't have to. Although possibly selenium. But really since there's such a great improvement, I'd keep things as they are. That's just me.

YAY for the good poop!

i see your point, its working so stick with it...
a friend suggested using a sock for a sling, so will try that tomorow- he's eating drinking pooping and chirping- sometimes- wonder if this affected his vocal cords?

I just noticed this thread. you can make a sling out of an old t-shirt thats what I did with mine. personally it sounds like mareks to me. if it is eating and pooping and you have the patience and time to give it can improve. you could try moodiechickens remedy as well I did several threads on it. I will try to find a pic of the sling and post it.

Thanks so much! i assumed all would get it if it was mereks, but i have a lot of time invested in the little guy- when it began he would lose balance and tip forward, then roll to the right, by that evening he was pretty imobile- so far my attitude is give him every chance i can, and he is a fighter...
