Hello! I am treating my 3 year old Brahma hen for SLM. Currently in our garage (it's cold here in Iowa) using Vaseline while awaiting arrival of Elector PSP (due Monday).

I am going to dip the legs of all 4 of our hens and will do a deep clean of the coop (we have an Omlet), spraying it with Elector PSP. But do I do anything about the run?

We have a walk in run on dirt/mulch. In the winter we have added a straw bale as they seem to enjoy scratching in it and nestling. Should I rake out the straw? I also have some First Saturday Lime I can apply.

This is our first encounter with SLM, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome To BYC

If you apply the Vaseline a few times a week, this should smother the Scaly Leg Mites.

Most do not treat dirt/mulch, but you can certainly stir it up and add a little FSL if you wish. Scaly Leg Mites mainly live under the scales of the legs (on the birds) so while some may be found in the coop/run I think giving a bit of a clean up and run treatment should be sufficient as long as you treat each birds legs.

I've never heard of treating SLM with Elector PSP, but perhaps that works.

We get them about every two years here, and blame the fact that they're silkies, for one, and, two, that they free-range where wild birds, squirrels, chipmunks, etc., do. We've used either vaseline every other day for 3 times, then repeat a week later, or Ivermectin 5mg Pour On. That's repeated in a week, too, but it has a 14-day egg withdrawal, which we don't follow. If I'm hatching, they hatch, if not, hubby eats them anyway. :hmm

Thanks for the guidance! Despite the near record temperatures today we are in the midst of winter (central Iowa) and I was hesitant to apply topicals when it was below freezing (hence the garage lodging this past week). I have read anywhere from weeks to months for treatment of SLM with Vaseline and an option to dip in Elector PSP (9ml/gallon of water) for 10 minutes as a 1x treatment with no egg withdrawal. We only have 4 hens so it wasn't too bad to treat everyone, though only the one is having issues.

Hoping between the week of Vaseline AND the Elector PSP this solves the issue.

I would think so since we handled it a few times with just the vaseline. That was when we just had a few chickens too, so greasing up 14 legs/feet wasn't a big deal.

When it grew to 50 feet/legs or more, we found Ivermectin the easiest way to treat when you have lots of chickens. We both go in the coops at night, one of us holds one and parts the feathers on their neck, and the other drops the appropriate number of drops on their neck. Our smaller silkies got one drop, the roosters got three, and everyone in between got two. Repeat in a week.

We have to do this every other year.
