Treating lice in chickens with cat flea products

I live below you in Lake Oswego. Battling the same issue. I bought the Eprinex (worth sticking in the BYC search). If you think it is a product you might like to try, I bought enough for a COW, so you are welcome to have some of mine for free. I do use the poultry dust from Coastal Farm and Garden as well. No fun, but sometimes you have to get out the big guns.

Please remember that you will likely need different products depending on what critter you are trying to kill. Lice are not blood feeders so products like frontline spray (which works great for mites) is not that effective. Sevin dust should kill both lice and mites. I personally use adams flea and tick spray plus because it kills lice and mites, but follow up with the frontline if I'm having a heavy mite infestation. It's best NOT to use eprinex for external parasite control because of the danger of the internal parasites building up resistance to it. I use eprinex twice a year for worming only and use the adams, frontline and/or sevin for external parasite control.

Wow! I'm blown away that the last two responses were from Lake Oswego and Yacolt. I'm in Amboy! They weren't kidding when they said small world.

I have not wormed these chickens either. My main symptoms (for identifying the pest) are little pale things clinging to the vent, feather loss that looks worse than just molting and some birds not growing feather back well, and I did have one hen die of unknown causes (on the nest box) but she looked in good health, I think she may have been egg bound (we were not home).

I do think these are lice not mites.

Pharm Girl I wish you were online now or I'd PM you, we are going by Lake Oswego today on a different errand. I would have taken you up on that offer to share. That is very generous of you however, I'd like to know how that product ends up working out for you. We don't have Coastal Farm and Gardens here, just Wilco or mail order of course, or Pioneer Feed.

Hi Neighbor! Pick up some sevin or poultry dust at Wilco and treat all your birds with that. Adams is best ordered online. Although lice are supposed to live their lives on the birds, you will need to treat their coop as well. I use a concentrate and mix it in my sprayer, plus dust all the nest boxes with sevin. There are several different types of mites, but the ones I see most often are are small and reddish brown - the smaller clear colored buggers are lice. Lice are not that much of a problem on birds that have access to dust bathing, but best to treat for both. These parasites can cause death in large numbers and just plain make birds miserable. Wilco carries the eprinex or you can get it online - there are other wormers that some people on here like better, like Valbazen, which I will probably try next time.

I'm home! PM me if you get this! I would love to get rid of the stuff. There is more than I will ever need. We are right on I-5 too. Running errands in a bit, but I'll keep an eye out for PM's from you.

I agree with KELAR about the Eprinex, but since you use it twice a year anyway, I figure it's double duty to kill the lice and worms at the same time. I otherwise don't worm my birds. Double duty I guess. I'm sure Wilco has the Poultry Dust (Permetherin) as well.

Good luck!

I wish I'd caught your message yesterday! We were getting a dog adopted (we foster dogs) in Happy Valley. I have to say that is very generous of you! We don't go over the bridge much otherwise but my brother lives in Clackamas so perhaps we can swing by there a different day. Thanks again for your offer!
