Treating Mites/Lice

I'm not exactly sure if my chickens have mites or lice. But, today I dusted them with a garden and livestock dust(it's all I could get). After a few minutes I saw little red things crawling all over them. Are the lice jumping off or dieing? I still need to treat the ground, but I'll wait and use DE.

Just curious exactly what was happening.

Since they all suddenly came out, does that mean they were dieing?
